Cookies Policy
Cookie Policy
How Daily Reality NG uses cookies — explained clearly, without the legal fog that makes every other cookie policy unreadable.
⏱️ Check This Before You Read Further
Before reading this policy, you can check how Google currently uses your data across its ad network by visiting Google Ad Settings — this shows what interests Google has associated with your account and lets you turn off personalized ads immediately. This cookie policy tells you how Daily Reality NG uses cookies; that Google page tells you what has already been collected about you and gives you direct control over it. Check both.
Takes 2 minutes. Could prevent months of interest-based ad tracking you never agreed to.
You are reading Daily Reality NG — a platform built on one principle: if we are going to ask you to trust us with your attention, you deserve to know exactly how we operate. This cookie policy is not a formality. It is a genuine explanation of what cookies are, which ones are on this site, why they are here, and what you can actually do about them. No corporate fog. No buried opt-out. Just the honest version.
Why Trust This Policy
This policy is written and maintained by Samson Ese, founder of Daily Reality NG, Warri, Delta State — not a legal template generator. It was reviewed against the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, Google AdSense Programme Policies, and GDPR baseline standards. If anything is unclear, I can be reached directly at dailyrealityng@gmail.com.

1. What Cookies Actually Are — The Simple Version
A cookie is a small text file. When you visit Daily Reality NG, your browser saves a few of these files on your device — phone, laptop, tablet, whatever you are reading this on. That is it. Not a program. Not malware. Just a text file with some information the website wrote there.
What that text file might contain: a random ID number that lets Google Analytics know "the same person who read article A also read article B," or a timestamp showing when you last visited, or a note that you already dismissed the newsletter popup and should not see it again. Nothing is being installed on your device. Nothing is reading your messages or accessing your camera.
🍪 The Warri Market Analogy
Think of cookies like the way a regular market trader starts to recognize your face. You come back on Saturday morning, and they already know you like your tomatoes without too much pepper. They did not write down your name or address — they just recognized your face and adjusted their greeting. Cookies work the same way. They recognize your browser so the website can behave appropriately for someone who has been there before.
Some cookies disappear the moment you close your browser tab — these are session cookies. Others sit on your device for months or years until you delete them — these are persistent cookies. Both types are on this site, and the full table in Section 4 shows exactly which is which.
2. Why Daily Reality NG Uses Cookies
There are four honest reasons, and I will not dress them up in corporate language:
✅ Reason 1 — The website would break without them
Essential cookies keep basic site functions working. Without them, navigation breaks, your preferences reset on every page, and certain security functions do not operate. These are not optional — they are infrastructure.
📊 Reason 2 — Understanding what content actually helps people
Analytics cookies through Google Analytics tell me which articles readers find useful, how long they spend reading, what devices they are on, and where traffic comes from. This is anonymous data — I cannot see who you are, only that someone visited a page. It helps me write better articles for Nigerian readers.
💰 Reason 3 — Keeping the site free to read
Daily Reality NG does not charge subscription fees. The way it stays free is through display advertising via Google AdSense. AdSense uses cookies to serve ads. That is the direct trade: you see ads (some of which may be relevant to your interests based on your browsing history), I earn enough to keep writing, and you get 630+ articles at no cost.
⚙️ Reason 4 — Remembering your preferences
Functionality cookies remember small things — that you dismissed the newsletter popup, your cookie consent choice, or display preferences you set. Without these, every visit to the site would feel like the first one.
3. Every Type of Cookie on This Site — Explained
🔧 Essential Cookies
These cannot be switched off without breaking the site. They do not collect personally identifiable information — they just make the plumbing work. Examples include your cookie consent preference (so we do not show you the banner on every visit), security tokens that protect against certain attack types, and session management cookies that maintain your browsing state across pages.
📊 Analytics Cookies — Google Analytics
Google Analytics places three cookies: _ga, _gid, and _gat. Together they track things like how many unique visitors come each day, which articles are most read, how long people stay on each page, and what search terms brought people to the site. The data is aggregated — I see "4,200 people read the BVN vs NIN article" not "Chukwuemeka from Asaba read it on Tuesday at 11am." You can opt out of Google Analytics entirely using Google's own opt-out browser add-on.
📢 Advertising Cookies — Google AdSense
This is the one that most people have questions about, so Section 6 covers it in full detail. The short version: Google's advertising system places cookies that help determine which ads to show you, prevent you from seeing the same ad fifty times, and measure whether anyone who clicked an ad went on to make a purchase. These cookies work across multiple websites — not just Daily Reality NG.
⚙️ Functionality Cookies
These remember choices you make on the site. They do not share your data with anyone — they just mean you do not have to re-set things every time you visit. These include your cookie banner response, any display preferences, and newsletter signup interaction history.
📱 Social Media Cookies
When you interact with the share buttons (WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Pinterest) at the bottom of articles, those platforms may set their own cookies. Daily Reality NG does not control these — they are third-party cookies set by the social platforms themselves. You can block them through your browser without affecting your ability to read Daily Reality NG content.
4. Full Cookie Reference Table

The advertising cookies (IDE, NID, DSID) have the longest reach — they follow your browsing across multiple websites, not just Daily Reality NG. This is how Google builds interest profiles to serve relevant ads. It happens automatically when AdSense loads on the page. You can stop this at any time by visiting Google Ad Settings and turning off ad personalisation — no account required.
💡 Did You Know?
The average Nigerian internet user has between 30 and 80 third-party tracking cookies active across their browser at any given time — most placed by social media platforms and advertising networks operating in the background of sites they have visited. Google Chrome, which holds approximately 65 percent of Nigerian browser market share according to StatCounter West Africa data for Q1 2026, blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito mode but not in regular browsing. Switching to Incognito for sensitive browsing sessions reduces (though does not eliminate) cross-site tracking immediately.

5. Third-Party Cookies — Who Else Sets Them
Daily Reality NG uses several external services. When these services load on the page, they set their own cookies. Here is the full honest list:
🔵 Google (Multiple Services)
Google Analytics: Tracks anonymous visitor data. Google Privacy Policy
Google AdSense / DoubleClick: Serves and measures ads. Google Advertising Policies
Google Tag Manager: Manages tracking tags on the site.
Google Fonts: Delivers typography. Minimal data collection.
📘 Social Media Platforms
When share buttons are present on the page, these platforms may set cookies even if you do not click the buttons:
Facebook/Meta: Cookie Policy
Twitter/X: Privacy Policy
LinkedIn: Cookie Policy
Pinterest: Cookie Policy
📧 Newsletter Provider — Kit (formerly ConvertKit)
When you interact with the newsletter subscription form on this site, Kit (our newsletter provider) may set cookies related to your subscription status and form interaction. Their privacy policy is available at kit.com/privacy.
Daily Reality NG does not control third-party cookies. Each provider operates under their own privacy policy and data practices. If you have concerns about a specific provider's cookies, contact them directly or block their cookies through your browser without affecting your ability to read Daily Reality NG content.
6. Google AdSense — The Honest Explanation
This section matters more than most. Google AdSense is how this site stays free. But it also involves the most complex cookies on the site, and you deserve a full explanation — not the three-sentence version most sites give you.
How AdSense Actually Works
When you load a Daily Reality NG page, Google's servers receive a request to fill the ad spaces on that page. In a fraction of a second, Google's systems check what they know about your browsing history (based on cookies from across the web), run an auction among advertisers who want to reach people with your interest profile, and serve the winning ad into the space on the page. This entire process happens before the page finishes loading.
What Google knows about you comes from cookies on this site and on every other site you have visited that runs Google Ads or uses Google services. That is why you might see an ad for something you searched for on Jumia while reading an article about CBN policy on Daily Reality NG. The two sites are not talking to each other — Google is.
⚠️ What This Means for Your Privacy
Google builds an interest profile linked to your device or Google account across thousands of websites. This profile can include inferred interests like "Nigerian personal finance," "Android phone buyer," or "small business owner." Daily Reality NG does not receive this profile — Google does. And Google uses it to decide which ads to show you here and everywhere else.
If you want to see what Google has inferred about you and control what it uses for advertising, go to adssettings.google.com right now. You can view your interest categories and delete any you disagree with. You can also turn off interest-based advertising entirely.
The Non-Negotiable Reality About Ads
Daily Reality NG does not choose which specific ads appear on the site. Google's algorithm does that. This means an ad might appear that Samson Ese would personally find objectionable or misleading. I try to block entire categories of ads (get-rich-quick schemes, adult content, gambling where prohibited) using AdSense category blocking tools, but I cannot vet every individual advertiser. If you see an ad that appears harmful, deceptive, or inappropriate, please report it to dailyrealityngnews@gmail.com and I will block that advertiser category.
How to Stop Personalised Ads
You have three options, from simplest to most comprehensive:
Google Ad Settings — Takes 2 Minutes
Go to adssettings.google.com. If you are signed into a Google account, turn off "Personalised ads." If you are not signed in, you can still opt out for your current browser. You will still see ads — they will just be based on the page content rather than your browsing history.
Google Analytics Opt-Out — Stops Tracking Across All Sites
Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. This prevents Google Analytics from collecting data about your visits to Daily Reality NG and any other site running Google Analytics. Works on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.
Block All Third-Party Cookies in Your Browser
In Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies → Block third-party cookies. This stops all cross-site tracking, not just Google's. Daily Reality NG will still function normally — only personalisation and some social features will be affected. This is the nuclear option but it is your right to use it.
7. Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 — What It Means for You
The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 came into force on June 14, 2023 and is currently the primary data protection legislation governing how Nigerian organisations — including digital publishers — collect and process personal data. The Act is administered by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
📋 How Daily Reality NG Complies With the NDPA
Lawful basis for processing: Essential cookies operate on legitimate interest grounds — they are necessary to deliver the service you requested. Analytics and advertising cookies require consent, which you give by continuing to use the site after viewing this policy.
Transparency: This Cookie Policy discloses every cookie type, its purpose, and its duration — as required under NDPA Section 24(1)(a).
Rights of data subjects: Nigerian readers have rights under the NDPA including the right to access data collected about them, the right to request deletion, and the right to object to processing for direct marketing (including advertising). All rights can be exercised by contacting dailyrealityng@gmail.com.
Third-party processors: Google (Analytics, AdSense) processes data on behalf of Daily Reality NG as a data processor. Google's own NDPA and GDPR compliance obligations apply to their processing activities.
📎 Source: Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 | Nigeria Data Protection Commission official portal — ndpc.gov.ng
The NDPC can be contacted by Nigerian readers who believe their data rights have been violated: ndpc.gov.ng. This is an independent supervisory authority — not connected to Daily Reality NG — and you have the right to lodge a complaint there if you are not satisfied with how your data concerns are addressed here.
8. Your Rights as a Nigerian Reader
Under the NDPA 2023 and international best practice standards, you have specific rights regarding how your data is handled through cookies on this site. These are not theoretical rights — they are exercisable today.
✅ Right to Be Informed
You are reading the exercise of this right right now. This policy tells you what cookies are used, by whom, and for how long.
✅ Right to Object
You can object to cookies used for advertising or analytics at any time by changing your browser settings or using the opt-out tools listed in Section 9.
✅ Right to Withdraw Consent
You can withdraw your consent to non-essential cookies at any time by clearing your cookies and adjusting browser settings to block them going forward. Withdrawing consent does not affect data already collected.
✅ Right to Access
You can request details of what data has been collected about you through cookies by contacting dailyrealityng@gmail.com. For Google-held data, you can access this directly through your Google Account or Google's Data and Privacy page.
✅ Right to Deletion
You can delete cookies from your device at any time through your browser settings. For deletion of data held by Google, use your Google Account settings.
9. How to Control or Delete Cookies — Every Browser
Here are the specific steps for the browsers most commonly used by Nigerian readers. All of these have been verified as of March 2026.
Google Chrome (Most Used in Nigeria)
Desktop: Click the three-dot menu (⋮) → Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data. Select "Block third-party cookies" to stop cross-site tracking while keeping site functions working. To clear existing cookies: same path → "See all site data and permissions" → Clear all.
Android/Chrome Mobile: Three-dot menu → Settings → Site settings → Cookies. Toggle off "Allow third-party cookies." To clear: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data → check Cookies → Clear data.
Mozilla Firefox
Menu (☰) → Settings → Privacy and Security. Set tracking protection to "Strict" to block most third-party cookies automatically. Under Cookies and Site Data, click "Clear Data" to remove existing cookies from all sites.
Safari (iPhone and iPad — Common in Nigeria)
Settings → Safari → Privacy and Security. Toggle "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" ON. Safari blocks most third-party cookies by default — this confirmation ensures it is active. To clear cookies: Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
Microsoft Edge
Three-dot menu (⋯) → Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data. Toggle "Block third-party cookies" ON. To clear: Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data → Cookies and other site data → Clear now.
💡 Did You Know?
Brave Browser — available free on Android and iOS — blocks all third-party cookies and most trackers by default, without any configuration required. It runs on the same Chromium engine as Chrome, meaning all websites including Daily Reality NG load normally. For Nigerian readers who want maximum privacy without configuring anything, Brave is the simplest solution. As of March 2026, Brave has approximately 70 million monthly active users globally according to Brave Software's official user statistics.

10. Consent — How It Works and How to Withdraw It
Under the NDPA 2023 and GDPR baseline standards, Daily Reality NG needs valid consent to use non-essential cookies (analytics and advertising). Here is how that consent works on this site:
How Your Consent Is Given
By continuing to browse Daily Reality NG after reading this Cookie Policy, you are providing implied consent to the use of cookies as described here. This is the standard for most text-based publishing websites. A first-visit cookie notice may also appear on the site directing you to this policy — your continued use after seeing that notice constitutes consent.
How to Withdraw Consent
You can withdraw consent at any time without affecting your right to access Daily Reality NG content. To do so: clear your browser's cookies for dailyrealityngnews.com, then adjust your browser settings to block third-party cookies as described in Section 9. You can also use the Google Ad Settings opt-out for advertising cookies specifically. Withdrawing consent does not make previously collected analytics data disappear from Google's systems — but it prevents new collection going forward.
⚠️ What Stays Active If You Block Non-Essential Cookies
Essential cookies will continue to operate because they are required for the site to function. You will still be able to read every article on Daily Reality NG. You will still see ads (because the space exists in the page layout) but they will be non-personalised — based on page content rather than your browsing history. Your preferences (like dismissed popups) will reset on each visit.
11. Children and Cookie Privacy
Daily Reality NG covers money, law, business, and real Nigerian life experiences. It is a publication primarily intended for adults and young adults aged 18 and over. I do not knowingly target or collect personal data from children under 13 through cookies or any other mechanism.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child under 13 has been using Daily Reality NG and cookies have been set on their device, contact me at dailyrealityng@gmail.com and I will address the concern promptly. For their device, clear all cookies through the browser settings described in Section 9.
For teenagers aged 13 to 17 using this site: the information here is accurate and applies to you. If you are doing school research or learning about Nigerian finance, law, or business topics, the content here is appropriate. But I encourage you to talk to a parent or guardian about how cookies and online tracking work in general — it is knowledge that will serve you well.
12. How This Policy Is Updated
This Cookie Policy is a living document. Things that will trigger an update include: new third-party services integrated into the site, changes to the NDPA or GDPR implementation, new cookie types added through Google AdSense or Analytics, and reader feedback identifying sections that need clarification.

13. Frequently Asked Questions About Cookies
Does Daily Reality NG use cookies?
Yes. Daily Reality NG uses essential cookies for website function, Google Analytics cookies for anonymous visitor tracking, Google AdSense cookies for advertising, and functionality cookies to remember your preferences. All cookie types are detailed in this policy with their purposes, durations, and opt-out options.
Can I read Daily Reality NG if I block all cookies?
Yes, with some limitations. You can read every article. However, some features may not work correctly — your preferences will reset on every visit, and the newsletter popup may reappear. You will still see ads but they will not be personalised. Blocking only third-party cookies (rather than all cookies) is the recommended approach — it stops cross-site tracking while keeping site functions intact.
Does Daily Reality NG sell my data?
No. Daily Reality NG does not sell, rent, share, or trade your personal data with any third party. Analytics data is processed by Google and is aggregated and anonymous from Daily Reality NG's perspective. Advertising data is handled by Google AdSense under Google's own privacy policy — Daily Reality NG does not receive your personal details from Google.
Why am I seeing ads related to something I searched elsewhere?
This is Google's interest-based advertising working across multiple websites. Google builds a profile of your inferred interests from your browsing history across every website that uses Google Ads or services. When you visit Daily Reality NG, Google uses that profile to serve ads it thinks are relevant to you. This is not Daily Reality NG sharing data with advertisers — it is Google's own system. To control it, visit adssettings.google.com.
What does the Nigeria Data Protection Act say about cookies?
The NDPA 2023 requires that organisations using cookies obtain valid consent for non-essential processing, be transparent about what cookies are used and why, allow individuals to exercise rights including access, deletion, and objection, and maintain records of data processing activities. Daily Reality NG complies with these requirements. Nigerian readers can lodge complaints about data handling with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission at ndpc.gov.ng.
How do I delete cookies from my phone?
On Android Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear browsing data → check Cookies and site data → Clear data. On iPhone Safari: Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. This deletes all cookies from all sites, not just Daily Reality NG — so you will be logged out of any websites where you were logged in.
What is the difference between first-party and third-party cookies?
First-party cookies are set by Daily Reality NG directly — for example, the cookie that remembers your consent choice. Third-party cookies are set by external services like Google or Facebook that load on the Daily Reality NG page. Third-party cookies are the ones used for cross-site tracking because they can follow you across every website that uses the same third-party service. Blocking third-party cookies stops most cross-site tracking.
How long do cookies stay on my device?
It varies by cookie. The full table in Section 4 shows exact durations for each cookie on this site. The Google Analytics _ga cookie lasts 2 years. The _gid cookie lasts 24 hours. The DoubleClick IDE advertising cookie lasts 1 year. The cookie that remembers your consent choice lasts 1 year. You can delete any or all cookies at any time through your browser settings regardless of their set duration.

💬 Questions Worth Thinking About
- Before reading this page, did you know that Google's advertising cookies follow you across thousands of websites — not just the ones you visit directly?
- Have you ever checked your Google Ad Settings to see what interest categories Google has assigned to you? What did you find?
- Do you think Nigerian digital publications do enough to explain cookies clearly, or is the industry generally using cookie policies as a legal formality rather than genuine communication?
- How do you feel about the trade-off: free content in exchange for advertising that uses your browsing behaviour? Is it fair?
- If Daily Reality NG introduced a paid, ad-free, cookie-free reading option alongside the free ad-supported version, would you consider paying for it?
Emeka once asked me why I bother writing a cookie policy that people actually read. He is a developer in Asaba and his exact words were: "Samson, nobody reads those things." Maybe he is right about most of them. But if you just read this one — and you now actually understand why you keep seeing ads for that phone you looked at three days ago — then it did its job. Cookie policies are not supposed to be unreadable. They are supposed to protect you. This one was written to do both.
